Doing a conformation or sale photoshoot with your horse? Oh girl, buckle up — it always takes a little time (and like… half a bottle of fly spray ). They never want to stand just right, ears are doing their own thing, and sometimes they suddenly forget how legs work.
But don’t stress — we just take it easy. No pressure, no rushing. I’ve got tricks to get those ears up, we’ll take breaks if we need to, and eventually? Boom. We get the shot. Pinky promise.
So if your horse acts like a wiggle worm or suddenly thinks they’re a giraffe… you’re not alone.

A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
Want to set your horse up for success (and make those photos pop)? Here’s what to do before their big day:
1. Farrier First
Make sure your horse’s hooves are freshly trimmed and looking sharp. Tidy feet = polished photo.
2. Clean and Shiny
Give them a good bath the day before or morning of. Use whitening shampoo if needed, and coat conditioner to bring out that glow.
3. Add a Little Sparkle
A shine spray adds magic—but avoid slippery products on legs or feet for safety.
4. Tidy Touch Ups
Trim bridle paths, whiskers, and ears (if that’s your preference). Small details help make a big impact.
5. Mane and Tail TLC
Brush and detangle that mane and tail so it looks full and healthy on camera.
6. Nice Tack or Halter
Keep it simple and clean. A plain leather halter or clean bridle looks best in photos — avoid anything too busy or colorful.
Want photos without a halter? Just ask! I bring my magic halter that lets us get those “naked” shots safely — it edits out like it was never there.
7. FLIES. ARE. EVERYWHERE.
Spray generously before the session starts. Trust me on this.
8. Stay Chill, Friend
Some horses get it right away, others need a few tries. No worries—we take our time and keep it low-key. We will get that perfect shot.
Bonus tip: Bring a helper if you can! Someone to rattle a feed bucket, toss a hat, or just help reposition can make a huge difference (and save us both a workout ).
