Horse & Rider Sessions

Horse & Rider Sessions – Let’s Get Ready!
Hey there, welcome to your super handy prep guide for your upcoming Horse & Rider session! I’ve got all the tips and tricks here to help you (and your horse!) have the best experience and get those dreamy, picture-perfect shots.
A Quick Heads-Up…
For the best results, try to follow these steps! While I can work some magic in post-production, a little prep goes a long way in getting those amazing photos.
The Setup
We’re all about that golden hour! Sessions are scheduled for sunrise or sunset, and we’ll be wandering around the property to find the best spots. If you’ve got a favorite area, make sure your horse is familiar with it so they’re comfy and relaxed.
Oh, and don’t forget to dress for the season, wear sturdy shoes, and double-check that your horse’s tack fits properly and looks sharp! Comfy horse = happy photoshoot.
What’s Included?
We can get a mix of shots, depending on what you’re after! Want some candid connection shots on the ground? Under saddle? Maybe a cool black background for a dramatic look? We’ve got options! Just pick your package carefully, because the more time we have, the more variety we can capture.
Bring a Buddy
I try to have an assistant with me, but having an extra hand from a horse-savvy friend, family member, or even your trainer is a game changer. They can help keep your horse’s attention, which helps me get those perfect shots of your horse with ears forward and looking amazing.
No worries if you don’t have an extra set of hands! I’ve got it covered—my awesome assistant can join us for just $35, and they’re always up for a road trip!
Groomed & Ready to Shine
A clean horse makes for beautiful photos! Try to have your horse all groomed and looking spiffy at least 10 minutes before the session. Give them a bath if you can, but make sure they’re dry before we start. A damp, dirty, or dusty coat will show in the pictures, and trust me, we don’t want that!
A little Show Sheen for shine, baby oil on noses and ears, and baby powder for those white socks can work wonders. And don’t forget to tidy up whiskers, ears, and tails, too!
Tack & Details
Clean and oiled tack is a must! This includes saddles, bridles, halters, and any other gear. We’ll use a leather halter or bridle for portraits—no nylon, please! And make sure you’ve got a clean lead rope without a chain. Don’t forget to fly spray before we start to keep your horse happy and bug-free.
Multiple Horses?
If we’re working with more than one horse, ensure they’re all prepped and ready to go before we begin. You don’t want to run around mid-session trying to get the next one ready!
The “Naked Halter” Option
This is a fan favorite! I’ve got a thin photography halter that gives us that “naked” look for your horse, and I’ll edit the halter out in post-production. It’s available to everyone, just let me know if you want to go for it!
Treats, Treats, Treats
Know what your horse loves! Bring along some favorite treats to keep them motivated and happy throughout the session. Treats help with getting their attention and rewarding them for being such a good model. If you’re using apples or carrots, pre-cut them to avoid a slobbery mess!
Exercise & Patience
If your horse is a little energetic (or a lot!), consider lunging or riding them an hour before your session. Give them time to cool down, and clean up any sweat marks, and they’ll be all set. If they’re usually antsy, brush up on ground manners and practice standing calmly in different areas. For those bombproof horses, no need for exercise, just bring the treats and let’s show off that personality!

Wearing Guide

What to Wear for Your Session: Let’s Get You Styled!
Welcome to your complimentary Wearing Guide for your upcoming Session. To make sure your Photos are beautiful and timeless, I made this Guide for you with a few tips that will be helpful.
Most importantly is that your outfit will fit you well, baggy clothing will change the look in your portrait. To ensure your chosen Outfit fits you from every angle just take some time and pose in front of your mirror.
Color Coordinate Like a Pro
Instead of having everyone match, go for colors that complement each other! Earth tones are a winner – they’re classy, timeless, and photograph beautifully. Want to add a pop of fun? Throw in some accent colors with accessories like scarves or jewelry. To help you with ideas, I’ve made a Pinterest board full of color combos. Check it out!
Dress for Your Passion
Whether you’re a Western, English, or Dressage rider, your attire should reflect who you are. Show clothes or performance outfits? Absolutely! It’s all about highlighting your unique style. Check out my inspiration boards for ideas – Western or English, I’ve got you covered!
Big No-Nos
Say no to big patterns, logos, and neon colors. Trust me, they can distract from the gorgeousness that is YOU.
Planning to Ride in the Photos?
If you’ll be riding, pick a dress that stays comfy in the saddle. Flowing dresses look stunning draped over your horse! And hey, why not bring along a casual, semi-formal, and formal outfit to switch things up? You can even wear your show clothes if that’s your vibe.

Wearing Guide

What to Wear for Your Session: Let’s Get You Styled!
Your photo session is all about capturing beautiful, timeless moments, and what you wear plays a big role in that! To help you feel confident and look your best, here are some tips and ideas to guide your outfit choices.
Fit Matters
The most important thing? Wearing clothes that fit you well! Baggy outfits can look unflattering in photos, so take a few moments to try on your chosen outfit in front of a mirror. Move around, sit, and pose to make sure you love how it looks from every angle.
Coordinating Colors Like a Pro
Instead of everyone matching exactly, opt for colors that complement each other! Earthy tones, soft neutrals, and warm hues are always a great choice—they photograph beautifully and stand the test of time. Want a little pop of color? Accessories like scarves, jewelry, or even a fun pair of boots can add the perfect touch. Need inspiration? Check out my curated Pinterest board full of color combos!
Tips for Small Children
Dressing little ones for a session can be tricky, but here are some ways to keep it stress-free and fun:
Let them bring a favorite small toy or accessory for a personal touch!
- Choose comfortable clothing that allows movement—nothing too tight or restrictive.
- Avoid outfits with scratchy tags or stiff fabrics to keep them happy.
- Layers work great! A cardigan or vest can add dimension without being too bulky.
- Neutral and pastel tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on their adorable expressions.
- Bring a backup outfit in case of spills or accidents.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Some things just don’t translate well in photos. Try to avoid: ❌ Large patterns that can overwhelm your frame ❌ Logos or brand names that distract from your face ❌ Neon colors that reflect harshly on skin tones
