Equine Portrait Photography
Horse Fine Art Portraits
Timeless, classic and artistic portraits of your horse — created to be displayed as gallery art in your home.
Your horse doesn’t need a fancy studio to have a beautiful portrait. My equine portrait sessions are photographed right at your barn, using a simple setup that keeps the process relaxed and easy for both you and your horse. From dramatic black background portraits to clean white background images and painterly artwork, each portrait is created to show off your horse without all the distractions.
And the best part? You don’t have to haul your horse anywhere.

How Your Equine Portrait Comes to Life
You don’t need a photography studio, a perfect backdrop, or a picture-perfect barn. Your horse can stay right at home.
I photograph your horse in a clean, safe area such as a barn aisle, covered arena, hay barn, or other large covered space, making sure I have the room, lighting, angles, and expressions I need.
Then the creative part happens in Photoshop. This is where I can remove distractions, create a classic black background horse portrait, build a clean white background, or create a completely different painterly environment around your horse.
So while the finished portrait may look like it was created in a beautiful studio, your horse was probably just standing in the barn aisle.
What Does the Setup Look Like?
You really don’t need much.
A barn aisle, covered arena, hay barn, or another large covered space can work beautifully.
- Enough room for your horse and my equipment
- Relatively clean and uncluttered
- Safe footing
- Protection from harsh weather
Black Background Horse Portraits
You’ve probably seen them before — the dramatic horse portraits with a deep black background that make the horse almost seem to glow.
Black background horse portraits are one of my most requested equine portrait styles, and for good reason. With the distractions removed, your horse becomes the entire focus of the image.
The details stand out. The eyes, expression, ears, mane, face and individual features all become part of the portrait.
And because the black background is created during the editing process, you don’t need a black studio or a special backdrop at your barn.
A barn aisle, covered arena, or other suitable space is all we need to create the original photographs.

White Background & Painterly Horse Portraits
Black backgrounds aren’t the only option. A clean white background creates a completely different look — bright, simple and timeless. It works beautifully for horses where you want every detail of their shape, face and expression to stand out.
For something more artistic, I can also create painterly horse portraits with a soft, textured or classic environment surrounding your horse. The goal isn’t to make every portrait look the same. Your horse and the look you love help determine the final artwork.

From Barn Aisle to Fine Art Horse Portrait
What you see here started with four individual horse portraits photographed right in the barn aisle. In Photoshop, I carefully combine the images, remove distractions, clean up the background, and create the finished portrait.
Photographing the horses individually is also safer for them and helps keep them from becoming too distracted by one another. The final image is very different from what was actually behind the horse when I photographed it.
The barn is simply where we create the photograph. The finished portrait is created afterward.

What Makes an Equine Portrait Different?
A regular photograph captures what was happening in front of the camera at that exact moment. An equine portrait takes that photograph and turns it into something more intentional. The background can be simplified. Distractions can be removed. Multiple photographs can be combined. Lighting and details can be refined. And the final image can be created specifically with wall art and display in mind – The goal is to create a portrait that truly looks and feels like your horse.
What Your Equine Portrait Session Is Like

Personalized
Every horse is different, and your portrait should be too. We’ll choose the background, lighting, and overall look that best suits your horse — whether you love a dramatic black background, a clean white portrait, or something more painterly and artistic.

Guided & Easy
Your horse doesn’t need to know how to pose, and you don’t need to have everything perfect before I arrive. I’ll guide you through the process and take the time to get the expressions, ears, and little details that make your horse look like your horse.

The Little Details
The expression you know by heart. The way they hold their ears. The shape of their face, their eyes, their mane. Those little details are what make a portrait feel personal — and what turn a beautiful horse photograph into a piece of art you’ll want to keep.

What Kind of Horses Are Good for Equine Portraits?
Pretty much all of them. Seriously, Your horse doesn’t have to be a champion. They don’t have to have perfect conformation. They don’t have to be a million-dollar horse. And they definitely don’t have to know how to “model.” I’ve photographed show horses, retired horses, young horses, breeding horses, ranch horses, cutting horses, reining horses, family horses and horses who were mostly interested in finding out whether I had treats. The goal isn’t to make every horse look the same. It’s to create a portrait that feels like them.
