America 250 Horse Photography A Mustang, an American Flag, and the Photograph I Had in My Head
A grey mustang, an American flag, and an idea I couldn’t stop thinking about. Here’s how I created this America 250 horse portrait and turned the finished photograph into a piece of artwork.
What’s More Patriotic Than a Mustang With a Flag?
These wild horses have a long history in the American West. They became part of ranching, transportation, war, and frontier life, and the mustang is still one of the animals most closely associated with the American West.
So when I started thinking about America’s 250th, I kept coming back to the same image. A mustang. A flag. Nothing else needed.
Meet Grace and Her Mustang
I called Grace because she’s the real deal. She runs GET Horsemanship up in Eastern Tennessee and has trained over 200 wild mustangs. She competes in Extreme Mustang Makeovers, she’s a certified TIP trainer for the Mustang Heritage Foundation, and she even donates trained mustangs to veterans with PTSD. She doesn’t break horses. She learns them. And they learn her back.
Grace brought this mare with her to the photoshoot. She was originally supposed to compete and eventually be sold to a new owner. But sometimes life happens. Right before that could happen, the mare was injured and never really got the chance to go under saddle.
A lot of people would have moved on. Grace didn’t even consider it. She kept her.
The horse came first.
The Shot We Had Planned From the Start
This was the image everyone went crazy over when I posted it. And this one wasn’t an accident. We set her up specifically for this shot.
I wanted the flag across the foreground, the darker background behind her, and her head turned back toward the camera. We worked her into the position I had in mind and waited for the right moment.
That ended up being my favorite image from the entire session.
That was the shot. This wasn’t a lucky frame. We set it up, worked through it, and waited for her to give me exactly what I needed. I loved it so much that I had it framed as a float-mounted piece and put it in my office. So now this mare gets to look at me while I edit galleries and answer emails. I’m okay with that.
Why This Shoot Mattered
This country gave me a chance. It gave me a life I get to build with my own hands and my own camera. So when I started thinking about the 250th, I didn’t want to do something surface level. I wanted to photograph something that felt true to what this country means to me. A woman who gives wild horses a chance. A mustang who carried the weight of this country’s story on her back.
