I know what it’s like to scroll through a phone full of horse pictures — eight hundred photos of his muzzle, his feet, his new saddle pad — and realize there isn’t a single photo of the two of you together that you actually love.

We spend so much of our lives with these animals. We ride them. Feed them. Groom them. Worry about them. Spend ridiculous amounts of money on them.

We know every little detail about them.

And yet somehow, we’re often missing from the photographs that document all of it.

The Difference

The Photos You Take Aren’t the Same as the Photos Someone Takes of You.

There’s nothing wrong with the photographs on your phone.

In fact, I hope you keep taking them.

Those everyday photographs are part of life with your horse. They show the ordinary stuff — the rides, the barn days, the goofy faces, the moments nobody else sees.

But a professional Horse & Rider session gives you something completely different.

Someone else is watching the light. The composition. Your expression. Your horse’s ears. The way you’re standing together.

For once, you get to be the person in the photograph instead of the person taking it.

You Don’t Have to Look Perfect.

You don’t need perfect hair. You don’t need to know what to do with your hands. You don’t need to be a model. You just need to show up as yourself.

Your Horse Is Going to Be Himself.

He may move. He may get distracted. He may decide something interesting is happening three fields away. That’s horses. We work with it.

The Part We Don’t Like to Think About

One Day, He Won’t Be Standing There.

This is the part I think about a lot.

Right now, your horse is standing in the pasture.

You’re riding him. You’re feeding him. You’re complaining about how dirty he is. You’re buying another supplement. You’re taking another 47 pictures because the afternoon light is really good.

You assume you’ll always have tomorrow.

And hopefully you will.

But horses don’t stay with us forever.

Eventually, the horse standing beside you today becomes the horse you used to have.

And when that happens, I don’t think you’ll care that your hair wasn’t perfect.

You won’t care that you were wearing barn clothes.

You won’t care that you felt awkward in front of the camera.

You’ll care that you are in the photograph with him.

That you can look at it and remember exactly what it felt like to stand beside that horse.
